Los Angeles has recently implemented a significant policy to enhance sustainability by focusing on plant-based food options in public institutions. This initiative, introduced by Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis, mandates that county foodservice operations offer at least one plant-based entrée daily and provide plant-based dairy alternatives. Additionally, it encourages competitive pricing for plant-based items compared to their animal-based counterparts. The policy also requires annual reporting on the quantities of animal-based and plant-based foods purchased, aiming to track progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with food procurement.
This move aligns with Los Angeles' broader commitment to environmental sustainability. In October 2022, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to adopt the Plant-Based Treaty, a global initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through a shift toward plant-based food systems. By endorsing this treaty, Los Angeles became the largest city to commit to such a transition, highlighting its leadership in addressing climate change through dietary shifts.
By prioritizing plant-based options, Los Angeles is taking concrete steps to reduce its carbon footprint and promote public health, setting an example for other cities to follow in the pursuit of sustainability.
